Abstract

718,519. Printers' blankets. DUNLOP RUBBER CO., Ltd. July 30, 1952 [Oct. 11, 1951], No. 23648/51. Class 100 (2). [Also in Group VIII] A printers' blanket having a low elongation in the longitudinal direction comprises a rubberized fabric in which is incorporated a fabric ply of pre-stretched warp components 3 having a low weft content, e.g. not exceeding 2.5 weft threads per inch, or no weft threads at all, and a ply of normal body fabric. The pre-stretched warp components 3 may be situated between two plies of normal body fabric 1, 2, a backing of fine cambric 4 being on the non-rubberized face of the blanket. The warp component 3 may comprise pre-stretched cotton or rayon threads. The blanket may be prepared by coating the assembly with rubber 5, by calendering or spreading, and vulcanizing in the usual way. The warp components 3 may include weft threads composed of a material, e.g. cellulose acetate, which is softened by a rubber solvent, the solvent being then included in the layer of rubber 5, vulcanizing taking place after the weft threads have softened. Alternatively the weft threads may be such as will soften at the vulcanizing temperature. The rubberized assembly may be stretched during or after softening of the weft in order to remove warp crimp. Pre-stretching of the warp components may take place in any suitable way, e.g. in steam. If the weft threads are omitted altogether the warp components 3 may be made by running the cords from a creel through a reed and then coating them with rubber composition either by calendering or spreading.
