Abstract
718,504. Lighting fittings. HOLOPHANE, Ltd. April 26, 1951, No. 9789/51. Class 75 (2). A luminair employing a horizontal rectilinear light source such as tubular fluorescent lamps L has a refractor closure plate 90 having a smooth upper surface and a lower surface 92 formed by longitudinally extending straight sided contiguous ribs 50 which cut off light transmission in transverse vertical planes above angles corresponding with the slope of their sides and which co-operate optically with the smooth upper surface to produce substantially the same cut-off angles in both transverse and longitudinal directions. As shown in Fig. 11 the refractor has a central portion in the form of a wide V (apex angle 172 degrees) and curved side portions. Figs. 12 and 13 show the light control of this refractor in transverse and longitudinal directions respectively. For symmetrical ribs making angles of 30 degrees to 39 degrees with the horizontal the effective cut-off of light in longitudinal directions is at angles of 60 degrees to 66 degrees.
