Abstract

426,071. Street lighting refractors &c. HOLOPHANE, Ltd., and ENGLISH, S., Elverton Street, Vincent Square, London. Dec. 5, 1933, No. 34182. [Class 75 (ii)] A street-lighting refractor for use with a vertical extended light source A comprises a bowl refractor 3 provided with vertical prisms 4 or flutes on one of its surfaces and a band refractor 1 within the bowl provided with horizontal prisms 2 on its outer surface extending downwards to a plane below the horizontal plane through the upper end of the light source. The prisms 2, instead of being on a separate refractor, may be on the outer surface of the refractor 3, as shown in Fig. 6. The prisms 4 may be arranged about axes for directional distribution and may leave zones 5 about the axes which are clear or light diffusing. The lowest part of the inner surface of the refractor 3 may be clear or be provided with diffusing flutes or prisms, or be sand-blasted or acid finished or otherwise made diffusing. The outer surface of the refractor 3 may be free from prisms or carry relatively weak prisms opposite the band 1 and tapering off towards the lower end. A reflector 7 may be provided.
