Abstract
718,231. Disc brakes. AUTOMOTIVE PRODUCTS CO., Ltd. Oct. 19, 1953 [Oct. 7, 1952], No. 25138/52. Class 103(1) In a spot type disc brake hand operation is carried out through a rod or cable 38 coupled to an arm 37 adapted to rotate a disc 33 having on one face conical pits 35 containing balls 34 disposed therebetween and similar pits 36 in the rear wall of a housing member 31. When the disc 33 is rotated the balls co-acting with the conical pits apply a thrust in one direction to a sleeve 39 and in the other direction to the casing 31. The thrust on sleeve 39 is transmitted through rods 41 and 26 and cup-shaped member 27 to apply friction pads 20 to one face of the disc, and an equal and opposite pull is applied by the casing 31 through the tube 30, cap 23 and U-shaped member 18 to the friction pad 19 so that the disc 10 is gripped between the two pads. Fluid pressure operation is provided by a piston 24 within a cylinder formed within the member 18, the piston acting through the member 27 on pad 20. The disc 33 has a ratchet wheel 46 rotatable therewith, the wheel 46 having both a pawl 47 which tends to turn the wheel during return movement of the brake and acts to provide automatic wear adjustment, and a holding pawl 48. In another embodiment described the alternative fluid pressure actuator acts through the lever 37 and cam disc 33.
