Abstract
1,226,756. Seals; disc brakes; screw-and-nut mechanisms. GIRLING Ltd. 31 May, 1968 [23 June, 1967], No. 28988/67. Headings F2B, F2E and F2Q. An hydraulic actuator for a vehicle brake comprises two opposed relatively axially displaceable actuator components (e.g. pistons 10, 11) defining a space therebetween for brake fluid, and an automatic adjuster for limiting the axial movement of the actuator components towards one another, the adjuster consisting of a push-rod 17, a nut 18 having a screw-threaded connection with the push-rod and means responsive to excess relative travel between the actuator components for turning the nut in a direction to compensate for such excess relative travel, one of the actuator components being non-rotatable and having therethrough an opening of non-circular cross-section which is arranged to guide the push-rod in its axial movement and be sealed thereto by means of a resilient sealing member 36. The operation of the automatic adjuster is described more fully in Specification 1,190,841. As shown, disc brake pads 14, 16 are operated by opposed hydraulic pistons 10, 11, the latter being connected to the pad 16 by means of a yoke 15. The push-rod in cross-section may be oblong, square, rectangular, oval or elliptical in order to prevent rotation of the piston 11. The resilient sealing member 36 may be a continuous ring of uniform crosssection fitted within a non-circular recess 37, Fig. 2, in either the push-rod or piston; alternatively, the sealing member may be formed of non-uniform cross-section to seat within a circular recess 37a, Fig. 3. For handbrake operation, a cam 23 is moved anti-clockwise to operate the push-rod and force the pistons apart. The automatic adjustment of the push-rod and the piston 10 is effected by the nut 18 which is made rotatable in one direction only on the screw-threaded portion of the rod by means of a clutch arrangement consisting of a torsion spring 31 and friction rings 20, 21. The ring 20 includes a metal washer 24 and is turned relative to the nut 18 by means of balls 28 arranged in cam recesses between ring and nut. The other ring 21 of the clutch is made of P.T.F.E. When the nut 18 moves axially to the right upon applying the brakes, the ring 20 is held by friction at the clutch and the nut 18 is rotated by cam action; when the hydraulic pressure is reduced, the friction at the screw-thread become greater than that at the clutch so that the nut is not turned back by the rotation of the ring 20.
