A spark producing mechanism for use with and operable by a torcl match to be ignited b) the sparks produced, comprises a displaceable member moved longi. tudinally to compress a spring, means for releasing the spring from the displaceable member at a predetermined point and means operated by the spring for producing a shower of sparks directed towards the top end of the displaceable member. As shown, downward movement of a plunger 5 first causes a latch pin 15, retained in inclined engagement with the plunger 5 by a spring 17, to engage its shoulder 19 with a latch ring 14 in the end of a tubular member 3, and second, on continued movement of the plunger 5 the tubular member 3 moves with the plunger whereby a spring 22 is compressed until the lower end 20 of the latchpin comes into contact with a button 21 at the bottom of the enclosing housing 2, and then, due to its conical end 20, enters the aperture in the button thereby moving into a position of axial alignment with the tubular member 3 to disengage the shoulder 19 from the latch ring 14, whereupon the spring 22 forces the member 3 upwards quickly to actuate the spark producing wheel 8 through the medium of the intermeshing gear 7 on the wheel and rack 4 on the member 3, with a snap action to produce a shower of sparks directed towards the top end of the plunger 5, on which pressure is exerted by the torch match 6. A housing 24 rotatable with the wheel 8 contacts the casing 25 and limits the upward movement of the member 3.
