Abstract

717,716. Disc brakes. GIRLING, Ltd. May 5, 1953 [March 7, 1952], No. 5960/52. Class 103(1) A " spot-type " disc brake comprises a number of pairs of opposed angularly spaced cylinders each of which is formed by a length of steel tube of which the ends are received in and are welded or copper-brazed to members of a housing assembly built up from flanged pressings and plates welded or copper-brazed together and reinforced internally. A brake disc 10 rotates with the vehicle wheel 12 through the rotatable hub 11 and is braked by friction pads 14 adapted to be urged into engagement with opposite faces of the disc by fluid pressure in the spaces 21 and 28 behind pistons 15 acting on the pistons in the cylinders 13. The fixed housing holding these units is prefabricated from sheet metal pressings and stampings and short lengths of tube welded or copperbrazed to each other. The housing is provided with a removable flat closure plate 32 for removal and replacement of the friction pads and pistons. Specifications 688,382 and 702,702 are referred to.
