Abstract

1375697 Disc brakes GIRLING Ltd 8 Dec 1971 [22 Dec 1970] 60739/70 Heading F2E The caliper 10 of a reaction type disc brake comprises a caliper body 11, which is slidably mounted on two parallel pins 13 attached to a torque plate 14, and a generally U-shaped bridge piece 12 rigidly secured to the caliper body 11 which bridge piece 12 straddles the disc and is manufactured from circular section bar material, e.g. steel, having a high modulus of rigidity: the body 11 incorporates an hydraulic actuator 20 which acts on a pad assembly 27 whilst the bridge piece 12 acts on an opposed pad assembly 29. The pad assemblies 27, 29 are mounted on pins 36 having heads 37 which lie adjacent a flange 38 integral with caliper body 11 and split pins 39 secure the pins 36 in place. As shown, the bridge piece 12 acts on the pad assembly 29 via a back-up plate 33 which is welded to a straight central portion 34 of the bridge piece 12 and the side edges 35 of the plate 33 are bent up so that drag forces from the pad assembly 29 are transferred to the bridge piece 12: the pins 36 pass through bores in back up plate 33. Alternatively the central portion 34 of the bridge piece 12 can be deformed to receive a backplate 28 of pad assembly 29 thereby dispensing with the plate 33. The torque plate 14 slidably receives the pad assembly 27. The bridge piece 12 is secured to ears 31 integral with the body 11 by bolts 30, but rivets or other means may be used. Portions 40 of the limbs 32 of bridge piece 12 are shown deformed by means of a concave flattening (41). The arrangement minimizes the radial gap which must be left between the disc and a wheel when the disc brake is mounted on a vehicle. In a modification the pins 13 are attached to the caliper body and are slidably received in bores in the torque plate.
