Abstract

A dough is formed by heating a paste of a polymer consisting of polyvinyl chloride or copolymers of vinyl chloride with vinylidene chloride and/or vinyl acetate or mixtures of any of these or mixtures thereof with butadiene-acrylonitrile copolymer, and a temporary plasticizer consisting of a polymerizable solvent and after gassing and completion of the expansion, heating the cellular product until the residual solvent is polymerized. Specified polymerizable solvents are styrene, a -methyl styrene, o, m and p methyl and other alkyl styrenes, methoxy styrene, methyl or butyl methacrylate, and mixtures of styrene with acrylic esters and nitriles. A non-polymerizing solvent such as acetone may also be present. Azoisobutyric acid, dinitrile benzosulpho-hydrazide and diazo-aminobenzene are specified gassing agents, lead stearate a resin stabilizer, and hydroquinone, catechol, and tertiary butyl catechol as polymerization inhibitors.
