Abstract
Methyl methacrylate or a mixture thereof containing up to 40% by weight of another monoethylenic monomer is polymerized in a stable aqueous dispersion of a copolymer of butadiene with up to its own weight of methyl methacrylate, the proportion of butadiene copolymer being between 1.5 and 10% by weight of the combined weight of the copolymer and the methyl methacrylate monomeric material. Monomers which may be copolymerized with the methyl acrylate are acrylonitrile, methacrylonitrile, methyl and ethyl acrylates, and ethyl, propyl and butyl methacrylates. The butadiene copolymer may be one obtained by copolymerizing butadiene and methyl methacrylate to completion in the presence of a compound containing two ethylenic groups, e.g. divinyl benzene and glycol dimethacrylate. The Example describes the polymerization of methyl methacrylate in a dispersion of a copolymer of butadiene, methyl methacrylate and divinyl benzene in the presence of an azo catalyst, sodium lauryl sulphate and lauryl mercaptan.
