Abstract

Copolymers comprise a 1-acyloxy-1,3-butadiene and a beta-hydroxy ethyl ester of acrylic or alpha-substituted acrylic acid, each being present in an amount sufficient to cause crosslinking of the polymer on heat-treatment in the presence of an acidic material. At least 5 per cent of each monomer should be present while a third monomer may also be used. Specified monomers are 1-acetoxy-, 1-propionoxy-, and 1-isobutyroxy-, 1,3-butadienes, beta-hydroxyethyl acrylate and methacrylate, methyl, ethyl, butyl and isobutyl acrylates and methacrylates, acrylonitrile, styrene, vinyl toluene and vinyl naphthalene. The copolymerization may be effected using, as catalysts, persulphates, azo compounds or benzoyl peroxide and as solvent, a mixture of methyl ethyl ketone and xylene. Specified acidic materials are zinc, aluminium, ferric and stannic chlorides, perchloric acid, N-butylsulphamic acid, benzene sulphonic acid, and p-nitrotoluene-ortho-sulphonic acid, with toluene as a further solvent. Solutions of the copolymers may be used as coating compositions and cross-linking effected by baking at 60 DEG C. Examples describe the preparation of copolymers from 1-acetoxy-1,3-butadiene, b -hydroxyethyl methacrylate and (II) and (III) styrene, (IV) styrene and methyl acrylate, (V) ethyl acrylate and (VI) methyl methacrylate.
