Abstract

715,938. Doors for vehicles. MAY, C. H. March 16, 1951 [March 21, 1950], No. 22970/53. Divided out of 702,278. Class 103(2) A sliding door assembly for a vehicle comprises a door, a supporting track on which the door is slidable, and mechanism actuated by the door as it slides, for maintaining the door out of contact with the side of the vehicle. In the arrangement shown, the door 151, Fig. 1, is attached to a portion 152 of the floor which is adapted to slide on tracks 154. The door midway up its side is provided with a track 155 adapted to receive a roller carriage 157 provided with wheels 158. The roller carriage is attached to a flat flexible member 160, Fig. 3, made of material such as spring steel and provided with holes 162 for engagement with teeth 164 on a shaft 165. The shaft 165, which is connected to the frame of the car, is provided with teeth 167 engaging a worm gear 168 on a rod 169, The rod has a spool 171 around which is wrapped a flexible cable 173 connected at opposite ends to the opposite ends of door 151. As the door is opened the cable 173 is operated to cause the spool 171 and the worm gear 168 to rotate whereby the shaft 165 turns to cause the flexible member 160 to move outwardly from the vehicle. The door thereby is maintained out of contact with the side of the vehicle. The track 155 has inclined slots engaged by pins 176, Fig. 4. projecting upwardly from the door, and at its near end is attached to the door by a spring 178. At its forward end it is connected to a bell crank lever 179 having a latch 182 adapted to be engaged in a slot 184 in the frame of the vehicle. To open the door the latch is disengaged and the door is shut backwardly. When the door is being closed the latch 182 strikes the opening 184 on the vehicle frame and is raised the track 155 being then moved rearwardly. In view of the inclined slots for the pins 176, rearward movement of the track 155 causes the door to move slightly outwardly. When the latch 182 enters the opening 184 the track 155 moves forwardly causing final movement of the door to be in a direction at right angles to the normal direction of travel of the door.
