972,480. Sliding gates. WESTLAND ENGINEERS Ltd. Oct. 8, 1963 [Oct. 9, 1962], No. 38102/62. Heading E2M. A lazy-tong-gate opening mechanism comprises a chain-drive 7 always engaging a sprocket 22 freely mounted on the gate 1, and a manual lever 14 on the gate which operates locking means to prevent or allow rotation of the sprocket, and hence to operate the gate by means of the chain drive or to disengage the gate from the chain-drive 7 for manual operation of the gate. In Fig. 2, the locking means are mounted on the leading gate-picket and comprise a sprocket-engaging pin 12 on a bell-crank lever 11 pivotally attached to a rod 13. The manual lever 14 is pivotally connected to the rod 13 and moves with a toggle action under the action of a spring 15 bearing on the lever 11. In Fig. 3, the locking means comprise a slidable member 24 urged by a spring 25 along a spindle 21 into engagement with a friction disc 23 attached to the sprocket 22. A bell-crank lever 26 engages the slidable member 24 and is pivotally connected to a rod 27 pivotally attached to the manual lever 14. If the gate is held stationary with the sprocket locked, the friction disc 23 is arranged to slip and rotate.
