Abstract
715,524. Combustion chambers. LISTER & CO., Ltd., R. A. May 2, 1952 [May 3, 1951], No. 10447/51. Class 7(3) In a combustion chamber formed by a cavity 8, Fig. 3, in a piston, the wall of the cavity is undercut around the periphery of the inlet orifice 9, which is formed by a throat tapering inwards towards the cavity, and the bottom of the cavity is provided with a projection 11 facing the orifice 9, the cavity surface being formed as a surface of revolution with its axis 8a coaxial with the projection 11 and orifice 9 and its generatrix having a greater radius of curvature adjacent the projection 11 than adjacent the orifice 9. The generatrix may comprise a portion of a spiral or, as shown, it may consist of two arcs 8b, 10b, Fig. 3, with centres at 8c, 10c spaced apart a distance equal to the difference between the radii of curvature of the two arcs, i.e. the two arcs meet in a common tangent. The combustion chamber may be formed by two insert members 10, 15, secured into a cylindrical recess in the piston, the rings being of a heat resistent material, such as a ceramic, and the base of the ring 15 being insulated from the piston by an air space. Alternatively the bottom portion of the chamber may be formed directly in the piston. The final entry portion of the throat 9 is preferably conical with an apex angle of 15 degrees and the ratio of the diameter of the narrowest part of the orifice 9 to the piston diameter lies within the range 0.15:1 and 0.25:1. The centre line of the fuel jet from a fuel injector 4 is arranged to impinge on the projection 11 within a circle concentric with the cavity 8 and having a radius of 0.1 of the radius of the lower portion 10b of the cavity. The apex of the projection 11 is at a distance of two-fifths of the radius of the lower portion 8b of the combustion chamber wall below the plane. containing the loci of the centres 8c, 10c, of the arcs 8b, 10b and the apex may be rounded, flattened, or formed with a depression facing the orifice 9. In a modification, Fig. 4, the projection is provided with a mushroom-shaped button 14.
