Abstract
954,664. Spray burners. N. LAING. April 27, 1960 [April 27, 1959], No. 14702/60. Heading F4T. A spray burner comprises a pressure fuel sprayer 12 projecting fuel into a cup-shaped depression 9 in a nozzle 1, an annular port 14 and/or a plurality of ports 15 conveying primary air into the cup so that the air rotates about the axis of the cup and an adjustable annular gap 8a between the cup and a tube 4 supplying secondary air over the edge of the cup. The primary and secondary air form in the cup a toroidal vortex which also rotates about the axis of the cup. The nozzle 1 is supported on the end of a tube 2 supplying primary air. The cup has a frusto-conical side wall 9b and a dished or conical bottom. The annular primary air port 14 is formed between the rounded discharge end of the sprayer 12 and a hemispherical recess 11 in the back of the cup leading into a central opening 10. The primary air ports 15 are disposed in a ring and each consists of a convergent nozzle. Radial vanes 16 in the primary air tube 2 give the primary air a rotary movement. The tube 2 providing a separate supply of primary air is omitted in the burner of Fig. 3 (not shown). In the burner of Fig. 4 (not shown) the fuel sprayer is supported in a tube which can be displaced axially to control the primary annular air port. In the burners of Figs. 5, 6 (not shown) the primary air ports 15 are inclined to the burner axis to cause rotation of the air. In the burner of Fig. 5 vanes for rotating the secondary air are mounted on a ring which is axially slidable on the primary air tube 2.
