Abstract

715,512. Yielding couplings. LAYCOCK ENGINEERING, Ltd. March 23, 1953 [May 12, 1952], No. 11930/52. Class 80 (2) [Also in Group XXXII] A torque damper for use in a motor-vehicle clutch disc, or with a universal joint, comprises tangential rubber struts 15, cylindrical or barrelshaped, in end cups 16 with spaced flared mouths 18 leaving a freely expansible midportion, and fitted, with initial compression, in registering recesses in a hub-flange 9 and side plates 4, 7 carrying the friction disc 1. The cups are retained axially by lips 13 on the side plates or by tangential pins passing centrally through holes in the rubber and clamped at their ends by the side-plates (Fig. 5, not shown). The bases of the struts may be grooved (Fig. 4. not shown), and air-escape holes 19 are provided in the cups. To provide a differential characteristic on rebound only, alternate recesses in the hub-flange may be of different lengths. so that their rubber struts act successively. Relative circumferential movement between the disc and hub is limited by clearance openings 10 in the hub-flange where traversed by distance-pieces 5 on bolts securing together the side-plates.
