Abstract

A terpolymer is obtained by heating to 300 to 600 DEG F. a mixture of 20-90 per cent. of an unsaturated glyceride oil, 5-80 per cent. of cyclo-pentadiene or di-, tri- or tetra-cyclopentadiene, and 1-50 per cent. of an ethylenically unsaturated compound containing a plurality of non-conjugated >C = CH2 groups, e.g. divinyl benzene, trivinyl benzene, diallyl maleate, fumarate, phthalate, succinate, adipate, sebacate, itaconate, carbonate, azelate, and pimelate, diethylene glycol bis (allyl carbonate), allyl acrylate or methacrylate, vinyl acrylate, ethylene glycol diacrylate or dimethacrylate, diallyl ether, dimethallyl ether and divinyl ether. Specified oils are linseed, china wood, soyabean, dehydrated castor, sunflower seed, cottonseed, safflower seed, and perilla oils, which may be bodied or unbodied. The polymerization may be conducted by heating the three components in a closed container or in a continuous coil of pipe and preferably under pressure, or by heating a batch of the oil and adding the other components continuously. The cyclopentadiene and unsaturated compound may be reacted together and then reacted with the oils. Specification 515,468 is referred to.
