Abstract
A normally inflammable synthetic resin is compounded with a flame-retardant which is a halogen-containing ester of an ethylenically unsaturated dicarboxylic acid wherein one or both carboxylic groups are esterified. The resin may be polystyrene which may be dissolved in chloroform together with the flame-retardant e.g. bis(2, 3-dibromopropyl) 2,3-dibromofumarate or bis (2,3-dibromopropyl) maleate.ALSO:An ester having the formula ROOC.CX=CX.COOR1 where X is a halogen, e.g. bromine, R is a 2, 3-dihalopropyl, e.g. dibromopropyl, group and R1 is R or H is claimed and may be produced by the addition of halogen to the allyl group(s) in an allyl ester of formula R2OOC.CX=CX.COOR3 where X is a halogen, R2 is an allyl group and R3 is R2 or H. In examples: (1) allyl alcohol is reacted with dibromomaleic anhydride to form allyl hydrogen 2,3-dibromomaleate which is then treated with bromine to form 2,3-dibromopropyl hydrogen 2,3-dibromomaleate; and (2) allyl alcohol is reacted with dibromomaleic anhydride to form diallyl 2,3-dibromofumarate which is then treated with bromine to form bis-(2,3-dibromopropyl) 2,3-dibromofumarate.
