Abstract

Higher tertiary alcohols are prepared by treating vegetable fats or oils with aliphatic or aliphatic-aromatic chlorine or bromine Grignard compounds. The reaction may be effected in an aliphatic ether, e.g. diethyl, dibutyl or diamyl ether, or in another inert solvent in the presence of a tertiary amine. Examples are given of the preparation of alcohols from (1) palm kernel oil and ethyl magnesium bromide; (2) coconut oil or palm kernel oil and methyl magnesium bromide; (3) soya bean oil or palm kernel oil and butyl magnesium chloride; (4) palm kernel oil or soya bean oil and benzyl magnesium chloride; (5) olive oil or cottonseed oil and ethyl magnesium chloride; (6) linseed oil, wood oil, soya bean oil, rapeseed oil, palm kernel oil or castor oil and methyl magnesium chloride or bromide. Reference is made also to the treatment of palm oil and the use of propyl magnesium bromide.
