Abstract
714,737. Rolling. PROPERZI, I. April 24, 1952 [Feb. 19, 1952], No. 10372/52. Class 83 (4). The passes 22 ... 34, Fig. 7, of a continuous roll train for the manufacture of metal rod or wire, each comprising three rolls 18, 19, 20, Fig. 3, spaced 120 degrees apart, are closely spaced with their drive shafts rotated in opposite directions and arranged alternately above and below the line of rolling, the rolls, in alternate passes, being shaped to produce threesided and round or hexagonal cross-sectional shapes on the work. In Fig. 3, the drive shaft 17 of the pass is arranged above the line of rolling to carry the upper roll 18 and two bevel gears 99, 100 which rotate bevel gears secured to the lower rolls 19, 20. These lower rolls are adjustable radially with respect to the line of rolling by means of screws 95 ... 98, Fig. 5, which act on bolts 94 mounted in the bearing housings 91 for the rolls. A tube 106 in screw-threaded engagement with a pin 108 and fitted with a squared end 107 for rotation by a key enables the pass to be withdrawn from the line of rolling. In the preferred embodiment, the passes are arranged in two groups 22 ... 28 and 29 ... 34, Fig. 7, each of which is driven by a train of toothed gearing from a main shaft 39 and 45. Each drive shaft is connected with its driving gear in the train by a splined connection while the driving gears are rotatably connected by intermediate gears which produce a reversal of rotation between each pass and a progressive increase in speed from pass to pass in the direction of rolling. The two main shafts 39 and 45 are accordingly rotated at different speeds by bevel gear drives from a shaft 52, Fig. 8, which is driven by belts 51 from a motor 48. A double resilient coupling 60 compensates for mounting irregularities.
