Abstract

660,136. Cold-rolling. MACCHI, A. Sept. 15, 1948 [July 4, 1947], No. 24237/48. Class 83 (iv). In a device for cold-rolling bars to polygonal cross-section, rolls having cylindrical rim surfaces of a width equal to the polygonal sides and having conical side faces in mutual contact are mounted on radially adjustable bearings and some or all of the rolls are driven by pairs of bevel pinions actuated from a single driving gear mounted on a hollow axle through which the bar passes. In a device for rolling round rod to hexagonal section six rolls 1, 11, Fig. 5, are mounted in radially adjustable carriers 4 on a frame 26 and three of the rolls 1 are driven through bevel gears 7 on each of their side faces by oppositely rotating pinions 6. Each pair of pinions 6 is geared together and one of each pair is directly coupled to one of three flexible telescopic shafts 23, Fig. 7, which are driven from an electric motor 16 through a speedreduction gear-box 24. A central hollow pinion 9 in the gear-box through which the rod passes drives gears 8 on the ends of each shaft 23 and may have teeth of sufficient length to permit the gears 8 to be mounted in different planes. A number of the machines may be arranged in line and in the first stage the rolls may have convex rims in order to improve the corners of the work. The carriers 4 are adjusted by radial screws 13 which are locked by screws 14. The rolls may have ribbed or fluted working faces.
