Abstract

714,306. Monumotive vehicles. BENCRAFT (1949), Ltd., and ATKINSON, J. O. June 1, 1953 [June 4, 1952], No. 14051/52. Class 136(2) An invalid chair or like wheel vehicle is provided with two side by side hand wheels 6; 7 capable of being gripped by the one hand, one hand wheel 6 being attached to the adjacent road wheel 4 and the other hand wheel 7 being secured to an axle 8 which passes through the hub of the adjacent wheel 4 and constitutes a free bearing therefor and at its other extremity fixedly carries the remote road wheel 4. The axle 8 is connected to the frame 3 by readily detachable bearings 9 so that the axle may be reversed to change the wheels for right- or left-handed operation. The vehicle is propelled in a straight track by operating both hand wheels simultaneously. A catch is provided for temporarily securing the two hand wheels together. If one hand wheel is manipulated in relation to the other the road wheels are appropriately rotated for steering purposes.
