Abstract

714,263. Floors and ceilings. FINDLAY. G. K. Dec. 1. 1952 [Aug. 31. 1951], No. 20633/51. Class 20 (4) Sound insulating means are provided between a ceiling 1 and a flooring 2 supported by steel beams 3 between which extend timber joists 4. The floor boards 2 are secured to timber joists 5 at right angles to the joists 4. The joists 4 support a layer of hardboard 9 over which is placed a layer 10 of glass wool or equivalent fibrous material, the joists 5 being placed on this layer 10 of sound insulating material. Over the glass wool is placed a layer of sand 11. In an alternative arrangement, pads of glass wool are placed on the upper sides of the steel beams before covering the beams with a membrane of asbestos, hardboard or like material. The floor joists are then placed in position on the membrane and a layer of sand, or other granular material, is laid upon the membrane before nailing the floor boards in position.
