An electric heating installation in a floor/ ceiling structure between vertically adjacent rooms in a multi-storey building comprises vertically spaced electric heating units 15, 18 located above and below a basis 10 for the floor, the upper heating elements being retained in position on the basis 10 by a thin layer 17 of foamed polystyrene such that the migration of large amounts of heat through the structure from either unit can take place. Hence, the floor and the ceiling receive heat from both units. In the structure shown, the basis 10 is a concrete slab which carries support rails 13 for a ceiling 12, behind which is positioned electric heating elements 15. These may extend over all or part only of the ceiling area. Thermal insulation blocks 16 are positioned between the rails 13 above the elements 15. On top of the concrete slab 10 is the shallow layer of foamed polystyrene in which the electric heating elements 18 are embedded, these being overlaid by a layer 19 of aluminium foil, hardboard 20 and floor tiles 22. The elements 18 may extend over all or part only of the floor area. Each set of elements will normally be independently controlled by thermostats in the respective rooms. An arrangement of the heaters is also described for a conventional wood floor supported on wood joists (Fig. 2, not shown). Specification 968,985 is referred to.
