Abstract
779,555. Ventilating buildings; ceilings. DAHLBECK, S. W. July 20,1954 [July 20, 1953]. No. 21095/54. Classes 20(4) and 137 [Also in Groups XI and XIII] In a heat transmitting roof or ceiling structure having an upper boarding 1 with a spaced ceiling panel 3 and means for supplying heat to or removing heat'from the chamber between the boarding and panel, the panel consists of one or more rigid plates of heat insulating material each provided with a plurality of substantially evenly distributed perforations, all or substantially all of which are covered by a membrane which is of such thickness and material as to provide only a small resistance to heat transmission as compared with the ceiling plate or plates whereby heat is transmitted by radiation by the membrane covering the perforations - into or from the space below the ceiling panel. The perforations comprise 10 to 70 per cent and preferably 20 to 50 per cent of the total area of the plates which may be of gypsum, synthetic resin, or the materials sold under the Registered Trade Marks "Eternit" and "Masonite". The membrane 4 may consist of aluminium foil, paper or fabric secured to either side of the plater or plates or embedded between two perforated plates or it may be formed by causing the perforations not to penetrate the plate entirely thus leaving a thin layer of the plate material in each perforation. The air in the chamber may be heated or cooled by being passed by a fan over a heating or cooling element in or outside the chamber or pipes 7 may be distributed through the chamber. Alternatively, if membrane 4 is of metal foil, this may be heated electrically. In order to supply fresh air, the membrane may be omitted over a few of the perforations at desired places. Heat or sound insulation or both may be provided for the boarding 1 by a layer 5 of porous gypsum or concrete, mineral wool or glass wool which may be covered by a layer of finer glass wool. Where sound insulation is to be avoided, plates of metal or "Eternit" are placed below the insulation. In order to increase the heat supplied to the ceiling by radiation, a layer of aluminium foil 6 may be provided.
