A method of constructing floors or roofs or preformed sections thereof comprises positioning one or more preformed foamed synthetic resin sheets beneath the floor or roof joists, forming a foamed mass of synthetic resin in situ on said sheet or sheets and wholly or partly around said joists to form an integral structure therewith and, when the foamed mass has set, applying concrete to the surface of the foamed mass. Preferably the sheets are secured to the joists by means of an adhesive. If the joists are solid, locating means are secured to the sides to key with the foamed mass, and the foamed mass may extend slightly above the top of the joist level. A pattern of channels may be formed in the surface of the foamed mass by laying a grid member on the mass before it has set to form strengthening ribs on the undersurface of the concrete. The concrete may be sprayed or flowed over the top surface of the cured foamed mass. The mass may be produced from a phenol-formaldehyde or a polyurethane resin. The method may be used for floors and flat or low-pitched roofs. For a steeply-pitched roof the method may be applied to the manufacture of preconstructed roof sections.
