Abstract
A liquid fuel, the combustion of which is used to generate a stream of hot gases under pressure for actuating pneumatically operated mechanical devices or for jet propulsion (see Groups XII and XXVI), comprises one or more nitric esters of saturated aliphatic monohydric alcohols containing 2-5 carbon atoms in the molecule, the ratio (or the mean ratio in the case of a mixture of such nitric esters) of oxygen-linked nitrogen atoms to carbon atoms therein being from 1:2 to 1:4 1/2 . Alkyl nitrates which may be used alone or in admixture with one another in the liquid fuel include ethyl nitrate, n- or iso-propyl nitrate and n- or iso-butyl nitrate. Amyl nitrate may also be used, but only in admixture with one or more of the alkyl nitrates above specified so that the mean ratio, as mentioned above, of the blend lies inside the specified limits. The liquid fuel may also contain a small proportion of a hydrocarbon oil as an agent assisting the lubrication of any pumps, cocks, valves or other apparatus through which the liquid fuel passes in contact with parts rubbing against one another. Apparatus in which the combustion of the liquid fuel may take place is described (see Groups XII and XXVI). According to the Provisional Specification, the liquid fuel may consist of or comprise substitution derivatives, particularly nitro-derivatives, of the nitric esters of saturated aliphatic monohydric alcohols, for example 2-nitro-isobutyl nitrate.
