Class 94 (1) [Also in Group VIII] Packages wrapped in heat-sealable material are sealed by directing one or more jets or streams of hot air or gas on to the overlapping sheets of material with sufficient force and at a sufficiently high temperature as to cause the overlapping sheets to be held in contact with one another and raised to the melting or fusing temperature of the material. As shown, air or gas under pressure enters a heating chamber 3 and thence passes at the desired temperature into a conduit 5 from which it is emitted through a line of jets 6 or a narrow slit to impinge upon the sealing line 7 of a wrapper 9 with sufficient force to hold the wrapper layers together while heatsealing takes place. For sealing side seams a single jet or line of jets may be passed manually or mechanically along the seam, or the package may be passed in front of a fixed jet or jets; for end sealing, a "cluster" of jets may be used. Clusters or single jets may be attached to the end of a flexible pipe connected to fixed pressure and heating mechanism. When applied to an automatic wrapping machine, the timing and duration of the hot blast may be synchronized with the operation of the machine by means of a valve situated at the place of air or gas intake into the heating chamber.
