Abstract

1,197,369. Packaging. W. R. GRACE & CO. 28 Oct., 1968 [30 Oct., 1967], No. 50974/68. Heading B8C. Articles are wrapped in heat-sealable film by feeding sealing film 43, 44 from two rolls 23, 25 sealing them together at 45, moving an article P<SP>11</SP> to be wrapped towards the seal and cooling the seal, and finally sealing around the article. The package P<SP>11</SP> is pushed against the sealed films by pushers 9 actuated by pneumatic cylinders 10. Air is blown from nozzle 12 to cool the seal, and to billow the film in front of the package, Fig. 6b. The package enters the billowed film, Fig. 6c, and seal bars 16, 17, one of which includes a heating wire, Fig. 5, seal the films around the article and sever them after these have been brought together by rolls 14, 15, Fig. 6d. The packet leaves on vacuum conveyer 18 and may be punctured, e.g. at 22, Fig. 1, and heat-shrunk. The operations automatically take place in the correct sequence due to the linkage shown in Fig. 1, initiated by vacuum air sensor 4 sensing a package P. The film may be plastics or paper secured by glue. The film may be blown by air or gas or drawn by a vacuum.
