552,842. Packeting. WATERS, H. F. Nov. 18, 1940, No. 9920/42. Divided out of 552,804. [Class 94 (i)] A machine for packing a commodity in a flexible-walled bag comprises means for withdrawing gases from the filled bag while the outside of the bag is subjected to atmospheric pressure, and means for flattening the mouth of the bag and sealing it by heat and pressure simultaneously with the exhaustion of air from the bag. If desired, suitable gas may be allowed to enter the bag after exhaustion of the air. The bag may be made of inherently fusible material, or of paper or other substance coated with such material. The machine comprises a conveyer 12 which is moved intermittently to bring the filled bags 11 in succession beneath a flattened mouth or spout 68 attached to a drum 61. The drum is pivoted on its support, and it is rocked to insert the spout 68 into the mouth of a bag which is clamped against it by presser members 80, 81 operated by cams and springs. Air is withdrawn from the drum, and therefore from the bag, through a valve 70, and gas is admitted if required through a valve 90. When suction is completed, the bag is sealed by a heating element 20 which is moved into contact with the mouth of the bag by a cam, and pressure is applied by the element and by a resilient member 30 which is also moved into contact with the bag by a cam.
