Abstract

1312705 A pressure-differential method of filling flexible containers with finely-divided material CLARENCE WEDEKIND VOGT 11 May 1970 [9 May 1969] 22611/70 Heading B8C In a method of filling flexible containers with a finely-divided material wherein occluded gases are substantially removed, a flexible paperboard carton 30 is lifted into sealing engagement with the lower end of a differential pressure-type filler 5 which has upper and lower valves 48, 14 open and closed respectively by valves 1, 3, while material is fed from a hopper 9 into a magazine 7, and closed and open respectively when the magazine is full, pressure then being applied, by means of a valve 2, and by way of an annular space 41 and a foraminous partition 38, to the material in the magazine as it flows downwardly into the carton 30 which, during this first filling phase, is thus maintained under slight pressure to prevent its collapse. Shortly after the valve 48 has been closed a vacuum source 28 is applied, through a valve 4 and an annular passage 24, to the upper end of the carton 30 to assist the flow of material from the magazine 7 and remove entrapped gases therefrom, the configuration of the carton 30 being maintained until flaps 18 on the lower end of the valve 14 are closed by the rising material. Valves 2, 3 are then operated to connect, respectively, the annular space 41 to atmosphere and close the valve 14. The valve 48 is then moved to its open position by connecting the valve 1 to a vacuum source 56 so that the magazine 7 is again charged with material, valve 4 being subsequently operated to vent the carton 30 to atmosphere or, to supply a low pressure to clean a filter 25 in the outlet of the annular passage 24. The carton 5 is then removed from engagement with sealing rings 33, 34, which may be pneumatic, and then closed. The vacuum source 28 should be of the order of 15-18 inches of mercury and the pressure source should be within the range of 15-20 p.s.i. above atmospheric pressure. The valves 1-4 are actuated by switches (S1- S4), Fig. 2 (not shown), which are controlled in sequence, respectively, by cams (C1-C4).
