Abstract

1359817 Method and apparatus for forming packets MOLINS Ltd 15 July 1971 [17 July 1970] 34755/70 Heading B8C A method of making packets, particularly "soft packs" for cigarettes consisting of a foil inner part surrounded by a paper outer part, comprises folding the packet material around a former 12, 14, securing the packet material to form a packet closed at one end and open at the other, collapsing the former 12, 14 so as to allow easy removal of the packet therefrom, and blowing the formed packet off the former by means of one, or more, jets of air. As shown, a member 14 is pivoted at 16 to a main body 12 of the former and has an operative part, to the left of Fig. 1, which is biased away from the main body by a spring 20, the part to the right of the pivot 16 carrying a stop 22. A source of suction, supplied through a pipe 41 to passageways 48, 50, 52, 53 leading to outlet ports 54- 61 in the front face of the former, holds the material on to the former while it is being wrapped and glued. After the wrapping operation compressed air is introduced through a pipe 28 into a cylinder 24 to force a piston 26 downwardly against the member 14 and pivot the latter toward the main body 12 of the former, the source of compressed air being controlled by a valve 34 operated by a cam 36 and follower 38. When the former 12, 14 has completely collapsed and the piston 26 has reached the end of its travel a port 62 is uncovered so that compressed air passes into a passageway 64 leading to five orifices 68, 70; 76 in the end face of the body air jets issuing from the five orifices blowing the packet off the former. The jets may be inclined to the axis of the packet so as to miss the package when the latter is ejected into a holder 92.
