713,454. Control systems for electric hot plates. ENGLISH ELECTRIC CO., Ltd. Aug. 22, 1952 [Aug. 29, 1951], No. 20371/51. Class 38(4) To provide for quick heating of a hot plate having a heating resistor 1 normally supplied through an adjustable input regulator 7-9, a thermal switch 4, 5 responsive to the temperature-rise in a selected part of the hot plate (and, if desired, also responsive to the value of current in the resistor 1) short-circuits the contacts 7 of the regulator for an initial heating period during which the heating resistor receives energy at a rate in excess of the maximum average rate permitted by the regulator. Upon the hot plate reaching a given temperature the contacts 4 open and the regulator assumes control. In a modified arrangement switch 4, 5 has a further "changeover contact which, in association with a three-position multi-contact manually controlled switch which replaces the simple " on-off" switch 6, allows the heating resistor to be controlled by the regulator even although the hot plate may not have reached a temperature sufficient to operate switch 4, 5.
