Abstract

1,030,583. Automatic temperature control of electric blankets. VAN DER HEEN N.V. April 9, 1965 [May 6, 1964], No. 15157/65. Heading G3R. An electric blanket control system includes one or more negative temperature coefficient resistor (a) for sensing the blanket temperature, the system being arranged so that the blanket heater is disconnected should the connections to the negative temperature coefficient resistor (s) become interrupted. An electric blanket comprises a heater 1, the supply of energy to which is controlled by the normally open contacts of a relay 2, the operating coil of which is shunted by a capacitor 7 and is connected in the anode circuit of a discharge valve 8. A D.C. supply is obtained from the A.C. supply 3 by elements 4, 5, 6 across which supply are connected two potentiometers; one comprising a resistor 10 and the negative temperature coefficient resistor 11 which senses the blanket temperature and the other including two resistors 13, 14 and a potentiometer 12. The first control electrode of the valve 8 is connected to the junction of resistors 10, 11 and to the cathode of the valve by a grid leak resistor 9 whilst the second control electrode is connected to the slider of the potentiometer 12, by means of which the blanket temperature can be set. Alternatively either resistor 10, 13, 14 may be made adjustable for this purpose. Thus should the sensing resistor 11 become opencircuited the first control electrode of the valve 8 is biased negative thus disabling the valve 8 to de-energize relay 2 and the heater 1.
