Abstract
911,741. Electrically-heated irons and hotplates. SIEMENS & HALSKE A.G. April 30, 1959 [April 30, 1958; June 4, 1958; July 22, 1958], No. 14768/59. Class 39 (3). [Also in Groups XXXV and XXXVI] A resistor for use in an automatic temperature control system comprises a body of ceramic ferro-electric material to which impurity conductivity has been imparted and to which ohmic contacts have been applied, the temperature co-efficient of resistance of the resistor being positive at least over a range of temperature, the resistance rising steeply with rising temperature, achieving, e.g. a ten-fold increase of resistance for a temperature rise of 20‹ C. Such resistors except for the contact layers are described and claimed in Specifications 900,771, 900,772, and 900,773 [Group XXXVI]. In Fig. 4, a resistor 42 according to the invention is connected in series with the heating element 44 of an electric iron, the operating temperature of the base 43 of the iron being manually set by means 41 which varies the distance of the resistor 42 from the base 43; as this pre-set temperature is reached, the resistance of the resistor 42 becomes so high that the current through the element falls to a very low value. Fig. 5 shows a hotplate 56, the heating elements of which are formed by resistors 58 according to the invention. The resistors 58 are rectangular rods secured to the plate 56 by bolts 51 and a pressure plate 59 and insulated from it by a mica sheet 57.
