658,711. Electric heating resistances. BRITISH THOMSON-HOUSTON CO., Ltd. June 1, 1949, No. 14729. Convention date, June 9, 1948. [Class 39(iii)] An electric heating element comprises a sheath 9, Fig. 1, containing a plurality of concentric helical resistance elements 7, 8 embedded in compacted insulating material, and one or both ends of the sheath 9 containing concentric terminals 1, 2 insulated from each other and from the sheath, these terminals being cut back at their inner and outer ends as shown to allow supply leads 11, 15, and the heating elements 7, 8, to be connected thereto. Different degrees of heating can be obtained, particularly if the coils are of unequal resistances, by varying the external supply connections so that the circuit comprises a single coil only, or two or more coils connected in series or parallel or some other arrangement. As shown in Fig. 4, however, one end of the sheath may have a terminal 16 forming a common connection for the heating elements and such a construction may have that end sealed by a cap 17 enabling the element to be used as an immersion heater. Ceramic spacers insulate the coils from one another and from the sheath whilst the tube is filled with powder during manufacture, the tube then being reduced in diameter.
