Abstract

712,939. Centrifugal moulding of hollow articles from heat-hardenable synthetic resins. CIBA Ltd April 7, 1952 [April 12, 1951; March 12, 1952], No. 8888/52. Class 87 (2) A heat-hardenable resin mass is spread on the inner wall of a rotating hollow mould by centrifugal force and the mould heated to harden the resin and form a hollow article. The inside of the mould may be coated with a lubricant, e.g. a silicon compound. The resin may be introduced continuously or intermittently into the mould either in plastic or a pulverulent cbndition. The resin may contain either a filler, e.g. stone, quartz or porcelain meal, quartz sand, talc, chalk, silicon carbide, asbestos or metal powder, asbestos or glass fibre, natural or synthetic fibres, textile or glass fibre fabrics or wire gauze, a dye or pigment or a softening or a hardening agent. The resin and filler may be introduced into the mould alternately to form a multi-layer article. The mould may be heated by a flame, hot air, steam, liquid metal, oil or water, an electric resistance, eddy current heating, high frequency induction heating or infrared rays: The article may be finally hardened out of the mould and may be shaped, e.g. by bending, before its final hardening. The mould may have depressions or engraved parts and may be in the form of a tube, Fig. 1 (not shown), or it may be split longitudinally as shown in Fig. 2. The article may be formed about a metal liner which forms an integral part of the finished article. The axis of the mould may be horizontal, vertical or inclined. The mould may be rotated by supporting it .in a lathe.
