Abstract
712,850. Thermat switches; protective systems. ELECTRICAL APPARATUS CO., Ltd. Feb. 19, 1952 [May 9, 1951], No. 95/52. Divided out of 712,824, [Group XXXV]. Class 38(5) [Also in Group XXXV] A frequency responsive switch, particularly for inclusion in a load shedding arrangement, such as described in Specification 712,824, [Group XXXV], comprises bimetal arms 25, 26 carrying contacts 27, 28, arm 26 being associated with a heater 29 which is energized from the supply source P, N through a parallel resonant circuit 34, 35 tuned to a frequency slightly below that of the normal supply, so that upon a predetermined reduction in the supply frequency the heater current is reduced to a value insufficient to maintain arm 26 in its " operated " position. A variable resistor 38 in series with the resonant circuit permits adjustment of the frequency at which the switch responds. In the arrangement shown, plug switches 43, 44 allow the heater to be in series with either the resonant circuit, so as to be frequency controlled, or a resistor 36-in which case the switch is responsive to the reduction of supply voltage. The arms 25, 26 may be provided with current shunts 32, 33 and with a magnet 30 and associated keeper 31 (or a toggle mechanism) for giving snap action and a differential between conditions necessary for make and break of the contacts.
