Abstract

Refined sugar cane wax is obtained from the crude wax by heating it with an hydroxylic solvent and a material acting as an absorbent for odoriferous and coloured impurities and as a filter aid, decanting or filtering the hot extract, and crystallizing the wax from the filtrate. The hot solvents dissolve the wax and a soft fatty fraction but leave a resinous fraction undissolved which is separated with the absorbents. The wax is then separated from the soft fatty fraction in the crystallizing step. Alternatively, the solvents may first be used at room temperatures to dissolve out the soft fatty fraction and then repeated at elevated temperatures as before, the extract obtained containing only the purified wax which may be recovered by crystallization. The solvents specified comprise ethyl, propyl, isopropyl, butyl, isobutyl, and the amyl alcohols and also fusel oil. The absorbents may comprise bentonite, Fuller's earth, diatomaceous earth, activated carbon, fine bagasse, powdered bauxite, and powdered alumina or mixtures thereof. Numerous examples are given with full details of working. Refined wax of hard texture and pale colour, free from soft fatty and dark resinous substances is obtained.
