Abstract
The hormone of the corpus luteum is concentrated by treating a solution containing the hormone in a solvent immiscible with water with one or more adsorbing agents and extracting the hormone from the adsorbent by means of an organic solvent. Carbon disulphide, petroleum ether, benzene, toluene and ethyl acetate may be used as the solvent immiscible with water, suitable adsorbents are fuller's earth, alumina, fibrous alumina, kieselguhr, silica gel, kaolin, calcium carbonate, carbon. For extracting the hormone from the adsorbent suitable solvents are ether, methyl or ethyl alcohol, acetone, chloroform or a mixture, e.g. of methyl alcohol and petroleum ether. The extraction of the adsorbent is made at raised temperature. After evaporation of the solvent the concentrated product is left in solid form or as a liquid which solidifies on standing.
