Abstract

Crude petroleum or fractions thereof are purified by chromotography in an adsorption column, without addition of a solvent, using 2 or more different successive absorbents. Adsorbents referred to are activated alumina, silica gel and calcium carbonate. The substances adsorbed in each part of the column may be extracted with a solvent, such as petroleum ether, and then with benzene or higher aromatic hydrocarbons or chlorine derivatives thereof. The process may be carried out at room temperature or above.
