Abstract

Antibiotic materials are concentrated and purified by passing a solution of the antibiotic material and associated impurities through a column of an adsorbent on which the antibiotic material is not strongly adsorbed and on which at least one of the impurities is more strongly adsorbed, the volume of the solution being such that the amount of antibiotic material therein is greatly in excess of that required to saturate the column therewith. The effluent from the column is collected in fractions and the antibiotic material may be recovered from the fractions rich therein, i.e. those collected between the time when the antibiotic material begins to appear in the effluent and the time when the more strongly adsorbed impurity or impurities begin(s) to appear. An example describes the application of the process to the purification of streptomycin, especially from histamine, using a synthetic inorganic base-exchange material as the adsorbent.
