Abstract

White oils are obtained from used lubricating oil by chromotographic separation using activated alumina as the adsorbent. The white oil is obtained as a direct filtrate and the undesired constituents adsorbed by the alumina are burnt during its regeneration. A system in which the adsorbent moves in counterflow against the oil flow is described; in the early stages it is preferred to operate at increased temperature to reduce the viscosity of the oil, and in the final stages it is preferred to operate in the presence of a volatile solvent, e.g. low boiling paraffins containing up to 8 carbon atoms. The solvent is subsequently recovered by distillation. Specifications 609,688 and 711,487 are referred to.
