Mineral waxes, purifying.-The known process of refining montan wax by extraction in presence of decolorizing powder with a solvent in which the oxy-acids or their compounds are at most sparingly soluble is improved by first deresinifying the wax in known manner. Solvents specified are mono- and poly-hydric alcohols, e.g. glycol esters or ethers thereof, e.g. ethyl acetate or glycol mono-methyl ether, ketones, e.g. butanone, or mixtunes. The same solvent may be used for deresinifying and for extraction, the treatment with decolorizing agent may be fractional and in counter-current, the extract may be cooled to separate fractions before evaporation of the solvent, and the wax esters or other fractions of the wax extracted in known manner may be treated. In examples (1) 100 1b. of wax is deresinified by treatment at room temperature with ethyl acetate, filtering, and evaporating the solvent, and is then dissolved in 800 lb. of heated ethyl acetate, boiled with gentle stirring for two hours with 75 lb. of " Carboraffin," filtered and heated to evaporate the solvent. Preferably 45 lb. of the solution is treated with decolorizing carbon first, filtered, and again treated with the remaining 35 1b. The carbon is regenerated by extraction with benzine or other solvent for the wax and impurities, followed by heating in steam or carbon dioxide. (2) 100 1b. of deresinified wax dissolved in 100 1b. of butanone is treated as in Ex. 1 with 200 1b. of a 2 : mixture of " Carboraffin " and fullers' earth.
