Abstract

711,922. Magnetic fluid clutches. EATON MANUFACTURING CO. Dec. 19 1951 [Jan. 11. 1951], No. 29730/51. Class 80 (2) [Also in Groups XXXIV and XXXV] In a clutch or brake having internal and external members 32. 22, respectively with a magnetic fluid 39 therebetween, the periphery of the inner member 32 has grooves 38 and the cooperating surface of the external member 22 is smooth. Thus heat, consequent upon clutch slippage, is generated adjacent the smooth surface of the outer member 22 and can be efficiently dissipated. As shown a magnetic clutch has a driving member 12 and a driven member 14 journalled on bearings 30 on input shaft 20. Two magnetic rings 32 are secured upon portion 28 of the driven member and enclose a magnetic coil 34. Current is supplied to the coil 34 by way of brushes 60, 62 and conductor rings 64, 66. The peripheral portions 36 of the rings 32 are each provided with a plurality of annular grooves 38 of square or other cross-section. The fluid magnetic mixture 39 is retained by labyrinth seals 40, 42. Cooling fins 24 are provided on the external member 22 to conduct away the heat generated adjacent the inner smooth surface. Specifications 649,553, 671,219 and 677,534 are referred to.
