Class 110(3) [Also in Groups XXVII and XXIX] In a power plant in which a prime mover is driven by pressure gas supplied by a free-piston generator having its fuel supply controlled by a governor operated by the speed of the prime mover an emergency device is provided to stop the freepiston generator by acting upon the fuel injection pump thereof when the speed of the prime mover exceeds a predetermined value. Power gas from a free-piston generator flows through a reservoir 17 and conduit 16 to drive a gas turbine 18. The amount of fuel supplied to the power cylinder 1 of the free piston generator by a fuel injection pump 11, tappet driven direct from the compressor piston 5 through links 12, 13, 14 is controlled during normal running by an arm 15 actuated by a centrifugal governor 21 mounted on the gas turbine shaft 22. If the speed of the gas turbine exceeds a predetermined amount the masses 21a of the governor act on a rod 30a to open a spring-loaded valve 30 which allows compressed air from an outside source to flow through a pipe 29 to raise a piston 27 attached to the rod of the fuel injection pump 11 which is thereby rendered inoperative and the free piston generator stopped. Opening of the valve 30 also allows compressed air to flow through a conduit 29a and operate a piston 33 attached to the stem of a spring-loaded relief valve 31 which lifts and relieves the pressure in the reservoir 17 and conduit 16. Relief valves may also be provided in the compressor portion of the free piston generator. Further, a shutter which is controlled by the governor 21 and closed when the turbine exceeds its predetermined speed may be fitted in the inlet conduit 16.
