711,739. Constructions and cooling of cylinders. LANOVA AKT.-GES. Nov. 22, 1951 [July 25, 1951], No. 27467/51. Classes. 7(2) and 7(3) The combustion chamber 3, Fig. 2, and at least two valve seats 5, 7, of a fuel-injection engine are formed in a separate insert 2 which is fitted or cast into a corresponding cavity in the cylinder head casting 1 and which extends over the whole cylinder bore. The insert 2 is of cast iron or low heat conductivity steel and the exhaust valve seat 5, Fig. 2, may be formed in the top of the combustion chamber 3 or, along with the intake valve seat 7, in the part of the insert exterior to the chamber 3. When the member 2 is pressed into the head 1, which may be formed of light metal, its upper surface may fit flush against the recess in the head, or projections 13, Fig. 2, may be formed thereon around the circumference and valve ports to form sealed gaps in communication with a bore 14 which is packed with sodium and closed by a screwed stopper 15, which sodium fills the gaps on becoming molten and provides a good heat conducting joint between the member 2 and cylinder head 1. In Fig. 6, the member 2 is cast into the cylinder head and a fuel injector 16 opens into the top of the combustion chamber 3, the intake and exhaust valve seats being formed in the part of the member 2 outside the combustion chamber 3
