711,603. Pit props. RITCHIE, C. May 21, 1952 [May 21, 1951], No. 11775/51. Class 20 (2) The upper and lower parts 11, 10, Fig. 1, of a pit prop are locked together by frictional means 12, and a fluid pressure chamber 13 is located between the upper and lower prop parts, so that both frictional and fluid pressure means usable separately or co-operatively are provided for supporting the mine roof, the fluid pressure means also serving for the setting of the pit prop. The upper part 11 comprises two hollow shanks 11a, 11b, Fig. 3, welded to the head 15, Fig. 1, and to a piston shaped bottom part 17 to leave a medium slot 18 tapering in the lateral and longitudinal directions. The slot is provided with a friction lining 19, and openings 22 are provided in the lower part 10 to receive two cross wedges 23 which also pass through the slot 18. Frict'on plates 24 are interposed between the upper and lower prop parts. Telescoping of the prop parts is therefore resisted by friction between the wedges 23 and the friction lining 19 and by friction between the plates 24 and the outer surfaces of the shanks 11a, 11b. Ducts 31, 32 extending through the shanks 11a, 11b connect the pressure chamber 13 with a supply valve 37 and a pressure relief valve 38. In a modification, Figs. 4, 5 (not shown) a single cross wedge is used.
