Class 20 (2)' In a telescopic pit prop the inner prop part 1 is clamped on opposite sides by two horizontal wedges 4, 5 of different pitch, wedge 4 being of steeper pitch than wedge 5. The wedge 4 is driven in first. The wedges bear on the part 1 through inserts 6. In Fig. 3, the wedge 4 bears on an insert 9 by an inclined surface and the insert bears by an inclined surface on a movable cap 11 so that when the wedge 4 is driven in the insert 9 is forced down and against the part 1. The wedge 5 is of bridge-shaped cross-section so as to take the thrust opposite the wedge 4 and cap 11. In a further modification, Fig. 4 (not shown), the wedge 5 is also arranged similarly to wedge 4 in Fig. 3 and has extensions above and below the prop on which act horizontal wedges driven through apertures in the prop and adapted to raise the inner part 1 against the roof. In a further modification, Fig. 6 (not shown), the wedge 4 is above the wedge 5 on the same side of the prop. The inner prop may taper downwards.
