Class 86 Apparatus for agitating material comprises a chamber containing a shaft having a rotatable inner member carrying at least one impeller and a rotatable outer sleeve member shorter than the inner member and which also carries at least one impeller, both the inner member and outer sleeve member being drivable from outside the chamber, and a stator which co-operates with one of the impellers to produce a shearing action on the material being agitated. In Fig. 1 an impeller 68 at the bottom of a chamber 8 is mounted upon a shaft 34 which is driven through spur gearing from an electric motor 48. The impeller 68 is positioned within an opening defined by an annular member 64 and baffles 66 so that the generally radial impeller blades 74 have only a slight clearance from the baffles 66. A second impeller 76 having generally radial blades 81, which may be disposed in a vertical plane or in any plane not greater than 45 degrees from the vertical plane, is mounted on the shaft 34 at any position above the impeller 68. A third impeller 82 similar to the impeller 76 is secured to the end of a tubular shaft 32 which is rotatably driven by an electric motor 54 through bevel gearing 52. The shaft 34 may be rotated substantially faster than the shaft 32. The container has a jacket 22 for heating or cooling fluid, one or more material inlet openings 16, a sight glass 18, a manhole 20, a thermometer well 30 and a discharge outlet opening 28. The apparatus may be used for forming homogeneous intimate blends or mixtures of any of the various kinds of materials used in the detergent, textile, cosmetic, dye, plastic, leather and similar industries.
